I’ve worked with students for 29 years as a youth pastor—from the dating era to the social networking era. For three decades I’ve been witnessing and researching the rapid change in youth culture brought on by digital interaction.
The challenges our kids face today can paralyze us with fear. But if we zoom out from our tunnel-vision on their struggles, we can gain an understanding of the many contributing factors. Kids largely go through the same changes they always have, and the life of the parent is the most authentic demonstration they’ll ever see of adult commitment – to God, to spouse, to family. Every day is an opportunity for a fresh start. Live out the process of growth and change that you long to see in your kids’ lives. It’s never too late, and they are watching.
In the midst of rapid change and uncertainty, we have the confidence of knowing that the God who made our kids knows and loves them even better than we do. He has the wisdom we are seeking, and also the power to bring about true growth and change – in our lives and in theirs.
